Strengths
The diverse courses offered. While I only took APs, the electives were very popular and they had classes for everyone's intrest.

They could have more labs during double-blocks or class to help us understand the content better. Often times, double-blocks were used to teach more and not for labs.

AP Environmental Science w. Mr. McNeil. While one of my harder classes, the content is something I still rely on today in my major today. He taught us in a way that had the content last with us and I appreciate that greatly.

They tend to show less "attention" to CP/non-honors courses. Sometimes it felt like they knew we were not good at math, so they didn't put as much effort into our courses.

Again, for example APUSH, was taught by 3 teachers my year. They each taught very differently and graded very differently. Consistency would help a lot.

AT Contemporary World History. It was a class that was only made up of people who loved history and we had an amazing teacher, Mr. Bograd. He made us value learning and wanted us to have fun with it.

Strengths
The variety of coursework is amazing. The English departments wants you to expand your horizons and not just learn for a grade. Moreover, the global literature requirement is so important in our education and I'm happy to see it valued.
Areas of improvements
The teachers are often inconsistent in grading and feedback. Sometimes it will feel like you are writing for a teacher's preferences rather than expanding your writing style.

Postcolonial Literature. It had meaningful discussion and exposed me to one of my favorite novels, Miguel Street.

My favorite books, besides the the one I mentioned before, was Giovanni's Room. The in class analysis of the beautiful writing and the emphasis on discussions about sexuality was important & informative.

Strengths
The focus on the process and individualizing it for everyone. My counselor knew I would not be able to ED because of finances. She adjusted my plan and worked with me to figure out a plan that worked for me.
Areas of improvements
I think for others, they were pushed into applying for more target schools than they wanted to. While I understand a balanced list, the department felt pessimistic about outcomes a lot.

Dwight Englewood exposed me to new academic experiences I would have never experienced otherwise. The unique course designs and emphasis on interdisciplinary learning pushed me to find what I loved learning.

Mr. McNeil. He always cares about his students and wants them to improve. His exams were the hardest, but he was always willing to sit down for hours and help you understand the content.

My favorite course was AP Environmental Science with Mr. McNeil, who was my favorite teacher of all time at Dwight. He had a hands on approach to teacher, taking us on hikes and field trips to see the real world applications of what we were learning about. He also gave a purpose to the subject, not only teaching us what, but also why were were learning.

Strengths
The reverse classroom layout of the class ensured that I was really learning the math concepts, and not just copying what the teacher showed us. There is also strong encouragement for students to ask questions when confused without judgement

While the reverse classroom is a strength, it is definitely challenging for students to adjust to when introduced for the first time, and there is a lack of support for that adjustment period

Strengths
The large quantity of counselors allowed for each counselor to develop and more individualized relationship with each student. Also, the allotted time and resources given to students to utilize college counseling was beneficial.
Areas of improvements
Each college counselor differed greatly in what kind of advice they were giving, especially for written applications. I feel that students of different counselors received differing qualities of counseling

The workload and expectations at Dwight are very similar if not more robust than at university. I was prepared for the work and the behavior in a college environment

Strengths
The science department did a great job of teaching material with Integrated Biology and Chemistry, especially the honors track. They also had a lot of variety and electives.
Areas of improvements
Integrated Biology and Chemistry 1 coud have used a little bit more structure. Also, letting sophomores take an AP science would be helpful for those who couldn't take more than 1 becauase of physics.

My favorite course in the Science Department was Integrated Biology and Chemistry 2 (Honors). My teacher was a great teacher and I felt like I learned so much my sophomore year and can still recall the concepts even in college. I also enjoyed physics junior year.

The biggest strength was the integrated system. It exposed us to a little of everything so that we could explore our interests. In addition, class is very lab based and hands on that made learning more interesting.
Areas of improvements
One area of improvement is focusing on the chemistry unit of the IBC program more. In addition, a more variety of science courses should we added because many students stop taking science after sophomore year due to the main options only being AP courses.

The integrated program gave students autonomy to be creative and know when to ask for help. We learned math not through formulas but facing problems allowing us to problem solve.
Areas of improvements
It can improve with having more structure in the 9th and 10th grade curriculum. The problem sets are still useful however I think that it should still be labeled with clear units and topics being learned.

I really enjoyed my calculus class. The teacher encouraged everyone to share their work even if it might not be correct. This was nerve wracking but also took me outside my comfort zone.

History Department's biggest strength is helping us build critical thinking and analytical skills that apply is various of our other studies. We did this through analyzing texts, reading current news, reading primary soruces, etc.

Some teachers were very rigid on the type of writing style rather than the content learned. It made the grading scheme and motives for learning very different between classes. The lecture style learning is also not for everyone.

The English Department prepares you well for the college level writing that is required. In addition, after the courses required in 9th and 10th grade students have the freedom to choose their class based on their interests.
Areas of improvements
Biggest area for improvement is alining the difficulty of the English courses. Many students notice that even though classes are labeled as the same "level" depending on the class the difficulty varies drastically.

My favorite course was Apocalyptic Literature with Ms. Garcia. We were able to explore a lot of cool types of writing through interesting different types of books from full novels to graphic novels.

Strengths
The college counseling biggest strength is the amount of resources they offer. However it is essential that the students themselves make the initiative to talk to them. It is how you make the experience.
Areas of improvements
I think students should start meeting with the college counselors earlier in their high school carrer. I think it would be beneficial for freshman to meet with them in order to help plan courses, extracurriculars, and internships.

After coming to college, I was able to notice how well D-E prepared us more college. Many of the skill sets and rigor I needed at D-E followed me right to college making my transition academically more easy.

English courses and the integrated science program prepared me well for university. Writing big papers or reading novels in a short period of time does not seem any different at college. In addition, having the integrated science program exposed me to many of the natural science topics and gave me a good background knowledge to many things.

The administrations biggest strength is also making sure the school felt connected and supported through various events that occur. They make sure to connect the various grades and create a good mentor like relationship among students and between administration/faculty and students.

The most important thing a student should know is that Dwight Englewood will prepare you academically for college. It is an academically rigorous school. It is also very easy to take classes that you want, but you need to do the research into these classes.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
My favorite teacher at Dwight Englewood was Dr. Tokar. She was my AP Calculus AB teacher, and she seemed to really care about what she was teaching, and made sure that all of her students understood that. I also really like Mr. McNeil. He was very passionate about the subjects.

I would recommend Micro and Macro Economics. Although I didn't take it, all of my peers who did really liked the class, and I wish I took it.

The biggest strength at D-E was the relationship between students and teachers. Teachers really made my experience at D-E. Joining clubs and communities at school are very well thought out and there is something for everyone.

Prospective students should know that when coming into Dwight Englewood that the curriculum is rigorous is regardless of placements. In addition, in order to get the most out of the D-E experience students should get involved in clubs.

My favorite teacher that D-E was Dr. C. He was relatable and used personal stories to teach his class. He made learning more engaging and interesting.

I would recommend AP Psych with Dr. C. His class is very engaging and interesting. He teaches psychology in a refreshing way that is really fun.

My favorite teacher at Dwight Englewood was Dr. C. He always made his classes interesting and exciting. He also always worked to make sure his students felt supported and that they had someone to go to if they ever needed to talk.

I think the art departments biggest strength is their flexibility. you can really take classes on any type of art. For example I took an independent study which is when you design your own course and create a scheduele on your own with one instructor.

I think the biggest room for improvement is making the "required courses" for art have more options. I think the ones they offer not are not very broad when in reality many of the higher level courses would be perfectly suitable for freshman and sophomore students.

I think the science departments biggest strength was keeping students engaged in class. They had a good balance between lecture, note taking, activities, and labs which i think helped keep students excited about class.

I think areas for improvement would be offering more flexibility in choice for classes students can take. The way things are formated pretty much everyone needs to take chem, bio, and physics leaving you only with real choices for senior year. If you are really interested in scinece you can double up and take more classes junior year but that is hard with lab periods.

My favorite course was my integrated biology and chemistry 2 class i took sophomore year. We did a fair amount of note taking and the tests were difficult but my teacher was very thoughtful and I feel like I learned alot in his class. The differences between certain precalculus teachers. this left half the kids prepared for calc and the other half completely left behind. Also, the problem based learning does not work and the idea that kids can learn on their own without a teacher to really walk them through topics just fails.

The Math departments biggest strengths were its teachers. Although some of them were more difficult than others i found that they really cared about their students and taught the topics pretty well. It was always easy for me to feel like I could go to them and get actual help I needed.

I think the biggest area for improvement is the format of class. The format for at least my first two years was do homework that would be really challenging and go over it in class. I wish we had more knowledge going into the home works as many times it would be completely new concepts I had never seen and I was expected to have it done in time to go over in class.

my favorite course I took was my pre calc class. I felt like overall my class had a very discussion based and collaborative enviroment which I think benefited my learning. I think one of the biggest strengths of the history department is the variety of classes that they offer. There truly is an option that will appeal to everyone even if they don't think that they like history.
Areas of improvements
I think because the history department is one of the only departments to offer AP classes for younger grades there is alot of pressure to be in AP history courses. I don't think this is good because it prevents people from taking classes that they are more interested in. The AP courses had to stick to a much more structured layout of class which i think overall is less engaging for students.

I would say the English department did a great job developing fundamental writing skills. They really drilled format of academic essays into each student which has set me up well for college.

My favorite class in the english department was "science fiction". It was not something i would have usually taken but i found the course material very interesting and we were able to dive really deep into the book which made a complex novel like Dune much more managable.

Minimal strengths were present here. People loved their college counselor and that was great for some, but others struggled.

I think there biggest strength was how supoortive they were of the students. They made it really easy to scheduele visits and were flexible when things were working out. They were eager to help as success for us was success for them.

I think that maybe they should start the college process earlier. I think it is import to have kids thinking about building their schedueles and starting early on extra curriculars that will set they up for success later in highschool instead of having them cram junior year.

When compared to NYC schools, the campus provided an great feel. It also felt less pretentious than other NYC schools. There was a focus on wellbeing

While it was good at the start, towards the end of my time there, the administration seemed misdirected and opaque. The school changed direction and it created public scandals.

D-E is a very diverse school, which is a value that is very important to them. The academics are rightfully difficult but the teachers really want their students to succeed.

Peter Waltman. I took his economics class and he did a great job of introducing micro and macro economics to the class using real-world examples. Even after I had graduated, he offered to help me with any future economics classes or questions that I might have. Edward Jewett and Donald McNeil are also great D-E teachers.

I think communication between the administration and teachers could be better. I think the teachers interact with the students the most and are therefore the voice of the students. If the communication between teacher and administration is better students will benefit as well.

The workload is definitely pretty intense for a highschool. I would say it prepares you well for college but most of your time after school will be spent doing homework especially if you do other extracurriculars.

As a freshman at college, I've discovered that the English Department at D-E does a great job of equipping students with the tools to be strong writers. Many students come into college not knowing how to write an analytical essay or research paper, but from my experience and my friends' experiences, we have not had this issue. We are able to comfortable tackle any writing assignment that comes our way with strong writing, grammar, and analysis.

So prospective students should know that while Dwight-Englewood emphasizes its academic rigot, not all students are in rigorous curriculums. Additionally, prospective students should know that part of maximizing the D-E experience means that they should take advantage of all intra-curricular offerings like clubs and school conferences.

When the department heads changed, the system of grading became deflated, which messed with what people were used to. This was especially annoying when the system of grading was changed mid year, as many people sent their transcript to colleges around that time, and their grades in science courses dropped.

There is no uniform way of grading from teacher to teacher. For example, the same student taking Calculus with two different teachers would receive two different grades, which isn’t fair. Receiving a good grade then became a matter of getting the “easier” teacher, instead of actually performing well in the class.

Strengths
The availability to have conferences with English teachers about quiz grades or essay feedback was nice. I also loved the selection of books for each course. I chose not to take AP Lit because the other electives available were just so unique. I would’ve been missing out on a core bit of the D-E experience —diversity— if I hadn’t taken those English electives.
Areas of improvements
Sometimes teachers are too biased. My freshman year, there was a teacher who tried to push the narrative that we as a school were trying to get rid of Mark Twain books, which wasn’t true, and she ended up in a few news outlets. I think that as a result, teachers became more hesitant to discuss the impacts of racism on literature.

Strengths
They were real with you. No college counselor fed any students false hope, yet they also knew when students, stressed from college results, needed a little boost. They also prepared their students ahead of time to answer supplemental essays.
Areas of improvements
I honestly have no complaints. The college counseling department at D-E is excellent.

Any preparation I have comes from the excellent teachers, and not the administrators.
Which courses in particular prepared you well for your university experience?
Every math course and science course. I’m studying mechanical engineering, so that’s a given.

Strengths
I’m not sure. Being in student government, I can say that administration was defiant and would rarely ask for the input of students or staff when making big decisions. They also handled many situations revolving racism poorly.
Areas of improvements
More transparency and open-mindedness is needed. The administration needs to stop making huge decisions without consulting how students and staff will be affected. For example, midterms and finals were replaced with week of projects, field trips and maybe one exam. D-E is a college prep school. This change in no way prepared me for the rigor of college.

Strengths
Everyone was super friendly to each other. I can say that I’ve had multiple enriching conversations with everyone in my graduating class at least once. The teachers were also passionate and genuinely wanted to see their students succeed.
Areas of improvements
The racism, classism, homophobia and sexism I heard over the years coming from students was insane. So much so that when I came to college I was surprised with how everyone here is so socially aware. Administration left it up to the student affinities to address these issues instead of doing something themselves.

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
Be ready for uncomfortable or new dialogues. During my time at D-E, I found it to be a politically charged place, usually leaning towards the left. Be opened minded to learning other people’s perspectives and sharing your own as well.
