The resources and space of the art studio was one of the reasons I came to GDS. Constant open access to a great studio.

My drawing and painting teacher was often a bit rude and forgetful. Had a very strong sense of the right and wrong way to make art which made experimentation difficult.

Although college is definitely harder than high school I think high school gave me all of the tools I needed to succeed in college. From writing to critically thinking and overall curiosity gds prepared me well.

GDS is what you make of it! It is so important to get involved in GDS fun and niche clubs because it makes the most of your experience and surrounds you with other people with similar interests. From an outside perspective, GDS can be seen as a bizarre school, but I think that’s what makes it so special because you can surround yourself with people like yourself, but also be around others that are so different from you.

The focus on teamwork and having fun rather than winning. This mindset led to really strong teams that often happened to also win because they were so strong. The coaches were also incredible.

I think some sports such as crew, which I did, were very low in participation, so I think more could be done to encourage excitement around under populated sports.

I loved Cross Country. I will remember being a part of that team for the rest of my life, it fundamentally changed who i am as a person and I am so grateful to have been a part of that team. The coach, Anthony Belber, is the greatest coach ever and cultivated a beautiful team environment and culture that ultimately led the team to victory.
Arts Department
Strengths
The arts Departments biggest strength was honestly the students. I felt during my entire time at GDS that the students were the beating heart of the arts at GDS and the teachers were the means through which the students were able to express themselves.
Areas of improvements
The teachers in the arts department were self-centered rather than student centered which was often frustrating and sometimes it felt like they used class time to gloat about themselves rather than to teach. I also think a wider range of classes in theater and voice could be added like a vocal jazz class or songwriting class.

Strengths
The biggest strength of the Science Department is the wide range of interesting science courses beyond just Bio, Chem and physics. I took very interesting higher level classes that motivated me to explore those topics more in college and that were very unique to GDS and special to have in a high school.

The teachers in the science department were very smart and helpful, but also very quirky. I wouldn't say it's something that needs to be improved, I just noticed it during my time at GDS.

I loved two courses I took in the science department. I took a genetics course with a woman named Katie I believe and Neuroscience with Bobby Asher and Bill that made me fall in love with neuroscience and lead to my pursuit of it in college. These courses were so interesting and went above and beyond the normal core science courses.

Strengths
The Math Department's biggest strength was its female teachers. I found that the women I learned from taught so clearly and I was able to learn so much better than when I had male teachers. I also enjoyed class with male teachers, I also love math, but I found that class with female teachers was very smooth and easy to understand and I was able to succeed. Another strength was the range of levels they had for each math subject which allowed students to learn at the right pace for them.
Areas of improvements
I think they could have more upper level course like Differential Equations and Multivariable Calculus taught be women and continue to have varying levels like extended and core into those upper levels. I found that I struggled in upper level courses even though I understood the math, simply because they moved too fast for me.

I loved Calculus AB with Lee Goldman. She was the most encouraging teacher I have ever had and I had so much fun in that class while also gaining a really strong foundation in calculus that has served me to this day.

Strengths
The History Department's biggest strength was its curriculum. I think the topics they covered in the curriculum and the approach they took to history beyond just reading a textbook was really effective. They used current events and other primary sources to teach and allowed us to have debates and reenactments instead of just writing essays.
Areas of improvements
I never had a history teacher at GDS that I liked. I am not a huge history person, but even so, the teachers I had were very unhinged and hard to follow. I really struggled to take them seriously in class and one even had a quasi tantrum and stormed out of class because the class was talking too much. I thought the teachers in the history department seemed to lack qualification and professionalism.

I liked junior year American history taught by Emily Landau. Mostly because of the content and the peers in my class. I found Emily Landau to be very unhinged and stressed during class. I never took a history class I loved, but a lot of my peers who were into history really loved Richard Avidon's classes.

Strengths
The teachers were the biggest strengths of the English Department. Almost every single teacher in the department was a truly incredible once in a life time kind of teacher and they had 5 or 6 of them in the department. These teachers encouraged students really deep thinking and held students to a high standard in terms of writing and critical thinking. There was also a good amount of diversity within the department allowing students to gain a new perspective each year from a new teacher.
Areas of improvements
I had one very poor teacher for English that stood out because the rest of the department is so stellar, but I had a really bad experience with that teacher and I think the department could do more to make sure that all the teachers are being held to a high standard.

10th grade English with Sidibe was my favorite course. She made class so engaging and showed me a new perspective on literature. We also read books that I loved like "Song of Solomon" and "Giovanni's Room" that were really moving and I really enjoyed diving into in class.

My favorite book we studied was "Song of Solomon" by Toni Morrison because I would not have gained the same level of understanding if I had read it alone. There was so much interesting stuff to unpack in the book that went very over my head when I first read it.

Strengths
There is one counsellor who is really strong, Emily Livelli, and she seemed to carry the whole department on her back. Overall the department is accessible and welcoming. They also do a good job hosting events over the summer to help people get started on their applications.
Areas of improvements
The counsellors were not good. Most of my friends were dissatisfied with the counselling they received and I was also unsatisfied. I felt that my counsellor was not listening to what I wanted and needed and kept pushing the same schools on my which ultimately led to me ending up at a school I was unhappy at. It was not completely their fault, but it was a component. Another component was the 10 school max rule which screwed me over in the end and I really wanted to apply to an 11th school (the school I am at right now) and they did not allow me to for no apparent reason.

GDS taught me how to write well and how to self advocate which have both served me well at Wesleyan. It also outfitted me with an open mind and the ability to learn from new perspectives.

The culture they cultivate is incredible and I love all of the events that are held and the way the school as a whole is run by Russell Shaw.

The biggest area of improvement is the high school principle. The high school principle has been and continues to be someone who does not embrace the culture of GDS, but wants to change it and I think that has a negative affect on the whole school.

GDS has a perfect mix of great culture and community, excellent sports and excellent academics. I loved going to school there and the life-long friends I made there.

Nina Prytula in the English Department and Sidibe in the English department have left lasting impressions on me and I learned so much from them.

Less to do with the department itself and more its mentality: knowing the type of student GDS tends to attract, the Arts Department does a fantastic job of actively fostering creative growth and engagement, often doing so not out of a sense of obligation to the school or student but from an intrinsic sense of duty within the instructors––these teachers love what they do and love it even more when they're able to share what their passion with others.

They *really* need to revamp the photography section and find someone permanent/who actually specializes in digital, still work.

As much as I hate to admit it, phasing out AP US History was actually a very tactical choice because it allowed those course instructors more freedom of choice to teach using their own, often more engaging methods and with greater comprehension/attention to detail.

Upper Level (UL) US History, Lisa Rauschart. She taught history really, really well, going over just about every aspect of US history in an intensive but not overbearing way.

GDS definitely prepared me for college and that’s truly the biggest praise I can give it. More than anything GDS teaches you how to actually think critically no matter the situation which of course becomes and invaluable skill as you transition into college.

The department’s biggest strength is its teachers. The teachers in this department specifically were exceptionally invested in their work and the quality of learning in their classrooms and making sure that students participated and liked the material.
Areas of improvements
Some of the teachers could surely learn that GDS is still a high school at the end of the day despite its high standards of learning. Giving juniors and seniors very low grades for good work can effect college admissions and I think keeping a students future success in mind is always important while grading.

Senior English with Nadia Mahdi was definitely the best class. I thought the final essay that allowed us to write a full 10-15 page essay really allowed for a high level of insight into a novel of each students choice and it prepared me well for the work I would go on to do in college.

Beloved and Playing in the Dark by Toni Morrison. These two books are taught to all students that go through the GDS high school system and for great reason. Both books have complete changed the way I read and think about the world. Especially as a white man I think Toni Morrison being part of the mandatory curriculum is a great decision to educate young people about exceptionally important topics

In a time where books and literature are becoming increasingly banned in public, educational spaces, GDS' English Department's curriculum and book selection is far and away one of the school's greatest strengths. All the English teachers genuinely value your growth as a writer and thinker––at the same time, there is no hand holding. GDS' English teachers will inspire you to rise to the challenge.

English 12, Aisha Sidibe (no longer teaching at GDS because Yom Fox is an opp). The loss of Sidibe is a genuine loss to the whole school––she was the only educator who, as far as I know, went out of her way to craft her own focused curriculum within the department's curriculum to teach post-colonial theory through a selection of texts and film. That class has far and away been the most useful thing I have taken from my time at GDS.

"The Gangster We Are All Looking For" by lê thi diem thúy, taught during English 11 with Nadia Mahdi. It's simply just a personal favorite text of mine for no other reason than I like it and Nadia taught it in such a way that was both comprehensive and engaging.

Emily and Sean really know what they are doing and are very helpful in the advising process. I also appreciate the common app workshops and essay workshops over the summer which help us get kickstarted.
Areas of improvements
Many of the other counselors aren’t as helpful and I had a not great experience with my own college counselor which almost resulted in me not being able to even apply to a school I wanted because he almost didn’t submit his rec letter on time. I think the department needs to be so much more organized in general because I have heard of so many kids where something went wrong just because of the college counselors.

Incredibly hit-or-miss with some of the counsellors. As a general rule of thumb, the counsellors who told it as it is and didn't try to be all compromising-y or sycophantic were the best ones––sometimes, you just need someone to tell you "yes" or "no" or "you have no chance of getting into this college, let's look elsewhere."

I didn't realize how genuinely good I was at writing until I got here. Also, as much as I hate to admit it, GDS being a uniquely liberal/progressive school, almost to the point of being performative, did actually make me a better and more respectful person. I feel equipped to have difficult conversations with respect and open-minded-ness.

It prepares you very well to become an independent adult especially if you plan on going to college after high school. It also just instills good politics and ethics into people that go there generally.

Can be a little too mob like politically sometimes to the extent is a deterrent to learning and developing complex diverse friend groups. Also some teachers just truly forget they are grading highschoolers.

The workload requires a level of self motivation and self organization that not all high schools require. You are expected to be able to handle your own time and structure your life in a way that allows you to succeed. The staff is also very helpful when needed and can help start the processes of developing these life skills.
