I believe that Gonzaga had a fantastic counseling department that goes unrecognized. They have 4 full time college counselors recognized by any of the top universities, 4 four full time class counselors, and a full time physiologist.

Hockey with Coach King because he was a great person who challenged me to be better player and person everyday,
Athletics
Strengths
The Athletics Department's biggest strengths are Far and Away the facilities provided. I've been on tours of a lot of D3 and D1 college campuses that simply don't have the facilities that Gonzaga provides the locker rooms and weight rooms are simply terrific. this gives us such a leg up in the athletic world and greatly contributed to our success.
Areas of improvements
The biggest area of improvement for me would have to be the coaching in the sports that I played, I was given a chance to play my first couple years of high school however I had an asthma attack during my junior year tryout, that prevented me from playing on the second day and as such I got cut and I think to me being cut for something like my asthma was always kind of a dark stain on the athletic department at Gonzaga but overall I still would say I had a positive experience.

For this question I think there's an important distinction as to playing and watching because watching at Gonzaga is unlike any other school you can go to. My freshman year quarterback was Caleb Williams, and my senior year are basketball teams starting five or all committed to division one schools. the environment at sporting events is unlike anything I've ever partaken and simply have been the best sporting experiences of my life. Playing though I only played one sport and that was soccer so that would have to be the answer.
Arts Department
Strengths
The Arts Department's biggest strength for me was the technology that they had available. We had multiple Studios for art along with when I took Visual Arts and took a class called TV Communications, we had a state of the art studio that we live produced our morning announcements in with multiple cameras and even in college I'm finding studios to be at a similar level of technological degree. the ability to learn something like that in high school and be able to practice in a studio such as that has given me such a leg up so far in college and is invaluable.

Overall I think once again the arts department does a fantastic job, the one thing that I would say though is a lot of times the teachers understand that students are taking it as their elective so they make the class in my opinion just a bit too casual where I would rather have a little bit more formal time of actually trying to learn some of the information. But even that is a minor complaint I think overall it's really well done.

My favorite course in the arts department was TV Communications taught by Mr Freeman, I currently go to Syracuse University where I am enrolled in the newhouse School of Public Communications which has a pedigree of being the best communication School in the nation, and during my intro classes of TV production and such I have learned only things that I already learned from Mr Freeman that in and of itself is more of an complement than I can say and I think speaks volumes as to how the class is run.

Our Arts departments didn't really focus a lot on the studying of individual artists from my time working we spent a lot of time like learning how to like replicate them specifically in TV Communications we would watch segments of great directors and how they use different shots in their videos and movies to make their productions dynamic and interesting and so things like that and being able to incorporate that into your own work and see how they can be used in live film was fascinating and really helpful.

Strengths
I think the science Department's biggest strengths would be the variety of classes you can take forensic science, chemistry, bio, physics. and this great variety builds into the Department's ability to teach different levels of students at different paces. Every single class like bio or physics or chemistry has an honors and a AP and a regular and that level of having three different classes allows it so that students can thrive at what they should be in.

During my time at Gonzaga I actually didn't have any massive things that I found to be lacking in the science department, science was personally my worst subject however even with this I had teachers come in early, stay late and overall make themselves extremely available to me and that made my learning experience far better

My favorite course in the science department was honors chemistry, I say that not because I got a good grade actually my worst grade in high school it was in this class however it was the work that I put in with the teacher Mr hudspeth, he came in early and stayed late for me at least once a week and was so helpful in my learning experience. I had him write a college recommendation letter because of how great of a teacher he was and so although my grade wasn't the best I always felt like I had a home in that classroom and it made the class fantastic to me

Strengths
The math department does a really good job of finding your level as you come in as a freshman and then building you up from that level to be wherever you need to be. They offer a summer course in junior year to ensure that anyone who wants to take calculus as a senior can and I think that's a big leg up on a lot of schools.

I once again would say that the biggest area of improvement for the math department would be in terms of the difference between teachers and class difficulty, junior year there was a few teachers who taught pre-calculus and the difference between them was so drastic that I had a significantly easier time than my classmates and I think that it needs to be more standardized across them so that there's an equality of experience

I really enjoyed AP US History with Mr. Gardner. He was a special teacher and a special person who was really knowledgeable in the subject.

The history department is the best at the school in my opinion the teachers in the department are nothing short of top class they are not only fantastic in the classroom but what I consider to be role models, Mr. Scott in AP Econ was my favorite teacher in my time at Gonzaga and I don't even like Econ.

I think the biggest area for improvement would be that AP euro is given as a sophomore year class, as it is one of the harder APs I think that scares a lot of students including myself away from taking it as the first AP offered at the school so I think that it being offered possibly further down the line would make more sense.

AP Econ was my favorite taught by Mr. Scott however as I previously talked a lot about it I would also like to shout out AP comparative government taught by Mr. Curtin, it was a wonderful class where I learned so much about so many different cultures and I think that it is so important for being a global citizen and if I was in admin I'd make it a required senior class so that as 18 year olds graduating get the chance to vote they would be taught the knowledge of the worlds governments to make an informed decision.

My favorite unit that I studied in comparative government has to be the unit on iran, to learn about a culture so different than the US was fascinating to me and it was really well taught by Mr. Curtin.

Strengths
The biggest strengths I see are with the writing process. Gonzaga starts by teaching the formula of writing, freshman year is heavy on what they call the "PT's" and although its annoying it builds a fantastic base. Then from there they build into creative and research writing and this sequential style makes learning how to write effectively seamless.

I think that overall it comes down to teacher by teacher, I was given a very good run of teachers during my time however a lot of my peers had vast complaints about the quality of their teachers and in this we got very different experiences within the same class.

My favorite course was my senior year with Ms. Jackson when I took Journalism, this greatly interested me as it is what I major in at college however Ms. Jackson provided me with a lovely base that I still use in my early semesters at college.

College Counseling
Strengths
College counseling is the place that Gonzaga sets itself apart from any other school in the DMV area. Our college counseling starts early at the end middle to end junior year and is a completely comprehensive experience I had complete access to a meeting anytime that I wanted with my college counselor he was extremely helpful pointed me in the direction of Syracuse, told me to go on a visit, then told me to apply Ed to ensure that I got in and overall left me with a brilliant experience. I simply can't say enough good things about College counseling. Not once did I feel like I didn't understand the process of applying to colleges, I had friends at other schools who would come to me to ask questions because I had such expertise in the field that was given to me by Gonzaga. even my parents will talk about it with regards to their friend's kids citing what they learned from the College counseling department at Gonzaga. I truly think that it is far away the thing that Gonzaga does best.

I truly believe that there is nothing that College counseling could do better they are comprehensive of getting you from the start to the finish line of making sure that your parents are fully informed of making sure that you are fully informed of making sure that you find your next home and it is wall-to-wall brilliant

As I stated earlier TV Communications I use the same technology that I use at my University along with during my first semester English, I got a 99% in the class because my writing skills were so far above the rest of the class the only reason I lost points the entire year was because I was late on an assignment that I forgot about. so as for being prepared for college so far I've gone into my University at a light walk I haven't even reached the difficulty that I faced at Gonzaga yet and I think that overall I have been supremely prepared

Once again I mentioned the TV Communications Department but I would also say that within English I write at a high level I also previously mentioned took journalism and use those skills of interviewing in my current life as a student, I would also just say the midterms at Gonzaga were so comprehensive and I had to learn such great studying habits that when I had to study for multiple midterms during college it wasn't something that I was unprepared for in fact it was something I was very prepared for and as such I did very well on all of my midterms and same to with my finals.

Strengths
I think our administration's biggest strength is their ability to fundraise, are endowment was 70 million dollars. This then allowed for great experiences to be hosted by campus ministry along with every single club that wanted to have funding to get funding, I participated in the aquillian (school news paper) And we always had plenty of funding from the school never once was an issue.
Areas of improvements
I truly didn't participate enough with the administration to say their biggest areas of for improvement perhaps one would be the fact that we give so much preferential treatment to Legacy students, if your brother gets in then your next brother is going to get in then your next brother is going to get and then your next brother and although that does create more enriching community in the sense that it goes on for Generations it is what I would consider to probably be slightly unfair.

Overall the biggest drinks for me would have to be the community that I feel like I was every single day a part of at Gonzaga never once said I walk the halls feeling alone or on a Friday night not want to go to the football game and go cheer on my team or truly in any endeavor I felt like I had a community behind me and I think that's what it means to be at Gonzaga it means that the community is always with you and truly it sounds stupid and applying to the school you wouldn't get it but you will if you go, the Brotherhood is real and is felt.

I think the biggest areas of improvement could be in terms of how they handle service at the school, they make service this requirement that demeans the meaning of what it should be to do service in the community I feel that a lot of students including myself at times did service for the sake of doing it for the hours and I think at points you kind of lose what it means to then do the service itself my class was the first class to have mandatory service and I think that it's somewhat lost the meaning of what Gonzaga had stood for in terms of previous service that it was something meaningful not a requirement you had to fulfill.

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
I believe that they should understand that Gonzaga truly is what it is made out to be. You enter as a boy and leave as a man, let Gonzaga into your life, especially regarding clubs or campus ministry. They shape your time at Gonzaga more than the classroom ever will and they are what makes the school truly fantastic.

My favorite teacher at Gonzaga was Mr Scott, he taught with true joy and love. not only that but he was also a master in his field in any question you asked was answered, but at the same time he was open in the sense that we would ask him dumb questions at times and he wouldn't pretend like he knew an answer he would just be like I don't know but then we would have a fun section of class learning about it as a senior sometimes teachers did a terrible job of realizing that once you're into college you truly do not care as much. I think that's just a fact of how it is at every single high school in the world. So I think his ability to make me enjoy class and love showing up for econ was impressive and great.

The classes that I would most recommend are TV Communications and as I said earlier AP comparative government and politics, I say the latter especially because of the state of the world today I think that learning about other cultures and understanding your place in the world is so important as to how you live as a global citizen today and that class helped me learn so many things.

Mr. Cowan and Ms. Murphy for their own reasons but they both challenged me to think about the world differently which I think is one of the most important things you can learn in life. How to view the world from another perspective other than your own.

AP Latin with Mr. Cowan. AP US History with Mr. Gardner. Social Justice in Action with Ms. Murphy. Those were the three classes that impacted me the most.

Not only does the education put you a step ahead of your peers in university, but the bonds made with friends and classmates will benefit you for years to come. These young men will always be there for you, whether you need someone to talk to or connecting with an employer.

Mark Howell. He told me to “check my ego at the door” since I was afraid of answering questions wrong. It encouraged me to answer and participate more

Strengths
They produced countless D1 athletes, even in sports where people started in high school. In my graduation class of around 200, 1/3 of them were athletes going to compete in college

Sometimes I think that the teams got to large, and even though it would exclude kids, they could have cut some more individuals as I personally believe that were not good enough to be on the teams

Rowing, as it is the sport I play D1 in college and is the center of everything I do in my life

Strengths
That over four years they offer a variety of courses and really give you a well rounded understanding in science, as the required curriculum does so.
Areas of improvements
I think that the general physics class that I took was a little to elementary I think that there were lots of topics that I never was able to learn about which I thought I would.

Mrs. Garvis, in Chemistry as I did not think that I would be good at Chemistry as it was difficult for me in middle school, but her guided notes made things very easy to understand and I always felt that I was very prepared for the test

Strengths
Being able to give lots of individual attention and help to students who were struggling or just needed additional help

I think sometimes even though teachers would try to help, I believe that at times students would slip through the system, and learn how to get by just for the class and not necessarily master the material, just short term memorization before it is forgotten

I loved my teacher Mr. Beiber as he did a great job at being able to explain the topics one on one to me as I was not someone who was very great at math, he made me able to better understand it.

Being able to put so much different types of information into just a few years

I think sometimes students found it possible to cheat the system a bit, so I think making the class structure with a little bit more integrity would benefit both the teachers and the students, even if that meant it would be more challenging

I loved my AP US History Class, my teachers was J. Gardiner and he was amazing, as I always felt engaged in the class and prepared for test/exams

Westward Expansion, as it was a unit I had never covered in depth before and was fascinating to really learn about for the first time

Strengths
At least in the advanced placement classes, lots of the readings was accompanied by writing frequently, so multiple times a week we were expected to submit written assignments, which I believe built a good foundation for my current writing skills

I think sometimes everyone felt that it would be hard to stay interacted with class, because the days were long and talking about a text for over an hour day in and day out can be challenging for high schoolers at times

Black Boy — a text that examined the ins and outs of race during segregation, which developed and understanding of the different perspectives on the topic, as the text would be discussed by a diverse group of individuals in class.

That they have five one on one counselors for each grade so everyone gets individual help

Honestly nothing, I think that the college counseling at Gonzaga is amazing and not much to improve on

Work load wise, I feel that it is more in University but the studying for exams that we had to do at Gonzaga is almost the same as what I do in college so it makes things very normal and comfortable

The AP writing courses as they had a high work load, which is something I experience in university, the work loads in both areas are comparable

They were able to discipline very well, making sure boys on their process of becoming men learned how to treat others with respect, uphold good morals and values, and take care of their community

Sometimes I think that the administration with disciple was a little to enforcing, as there were a few times I got in trouble for things I didn't even do or were bad

I think that it is an amazing place, academically, athletically, and religiously. In the D.C. area I would not chose a better place.

Sometimes the administration gets a little political, as some of the decisions that the make are based off of personal interest and other circumstances

It is a school that fosters relationships with your teachers, fellow students, and larger community will continuing their strong and historical educational programs to make boys into men

Brandon Cowan, while at times I couldn't see his reasoning for things he is a very stand up person and role model that I am grateful for as he has shaped me to be the person I am today
