The English Department at Hackley prepares students well for writing required in any field. The teachers design unique and exciting courses, and the core writing curriculum, while challenging, leaves graduates seasoned and excellent writers.

Strengths
The college counselors were supportive of students regardless of their level and fought for us every step of the way. We were made aware of the process early and enjoyed support throughout.
Areas of improvements
I think Hackley's grading system was supportive of students, but at times, in the liberal arts, it was not as reflective of the intensity/rigor of the courses as only AP in STEM was offered and not humanities.

The computer science curriculum under the direction of Mrs. Tranchida, was excellent and prepared me well for a challenging CS program at Georgia Tech. There was a lot of new courses pioneered when I was at Hackley that inspired my interest in the field and helped me picked the direction of my major. They also give me exposure to some pretty niche topics I didn't cover until midway through my college degree! I also am minoring in Business, which I picked up interest from outside of Hackley so I wouldn't say it relates significantly. However, the rest of the liberal arts and STEM program at Hackley was equally rigorous and preparative and I felt like I could handle anything GT through at me!
Which courses in particular prepared you well for your university experience?
The new computer science courses (Post-AP Data Science, Post-AP Mobile App Dev, AP CS, AP Calc AB/BC, Multi, the entire english program, the language program -- Hackley has an EXCELLENT language program, etc.). The Language program in particular provided so much depth in the subject from even the middle school, and prepared me so well for college level courses and study abroad opportunities. As well as the CS program, I would say Hackley's language learning opportunities were second to none.

They try to make every student sound the same, they restrain you and lowball your colleges so that they can brag about how you got into the majority of schools they apply. The counselors are rude, snobby, and think they’re better than you. In particular Ms. Kratzok, who advised me to completely get rid of my personal statement and told me there was no chance I could get into a school like tufts

The administration, specifically the head of the upper school when I was there, was caring and took time to get to know each and every one of the students in the upper school. He was always on our side and supportive of the individual success of each student, as well as the larger school community.

Hackley has excellent liberal arts, STEM, and language programs that are rigorous, preparing students for the challenges of college, but also full of supportive staff and faculty who help students along the way. There are also great opportunities in the Arts and Sports specifically to help students grow as people beyond their studies.

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
Hackley prepares students well in the liberal arts, but also has a rather underrated STEM and CS program. There a lot of niche course options in those fields and excellent faculty supporting growth in those fields.

I am split between Mrs. Tranchida, who pioneered an exciting and world-class CS program offering, Mrs. Washington, a Spanish teacher who inspired my interest in Spanish through college and beyond, and Mr. Freccia, who supported me endlessly through the challenging journey of college applications.
What courses would you recommend?
The entire CS curriculum, especially following AP. Upper-level language classes, such as the AP and Post-AP language and culture or film studies classes. I would also recommend doing at least one independent study in a subject you genuinely find interesting.

10th Grade History. Ms. Baal made the class a lot of fun with activities and we were able to explore topics that we were interested in personally

I really enjoyed American Law with Mr.Bass because it was different from the other history courses in the sense that it was very relevant to our current society. We watched a lot of films, did a mock trial, and had important conversations.

It is not a secret that Hackley takes writing very seriously. The english classes at first were very challenging for me and others, but it was essential to developing efficient writing and critical thinking skills. It also not only prizes writing skills, but oral communication as it is set up like a seminar.

I do think that as helpful the english classes were, it was difficult to figure out the standard or certain expectations for assignments.

I really enjoyed 10th grade English with Mr. Flanigan. The class was designed so that everyone would participate and build off on each other. It was also a class that helped me to write an effect analytical essay on literature.

Hackley has such a strong community and almost everyone was friends with everyone. That is including teachers and faculty as well.
Areas of improvements
Overall, I feel like some teachers could be more effective in communicating with students their expectations in coursework. I also do think we are very limited in the types of courses we have, and it is geared strongly towards STEM.

The community is extremely close-knit and there will always be someone willing to support you in any way.

My favorite teacher was Mr. Flanigan because he made it super easy to come to talk to him during free periods to not only discuss coursework, but also life in general. He was my unofficial advisor and was always there when students needed him!

I really recommend American Law with Mr.Bass for those who are interested in our Justice System.

Hackley is great place for people of all walks of life. From athletes to academics everyone has a place there.

Mr.Mclay was my favorite teacher. He was so exhilarating to experience. He brought physics to life and made me want to learn.

I would recommend Dr.Fergusons english class in 10th grade.

Lots of Fields at Hackley (around 6) and the new gym really made it easy to compete and grow as an athlete.
Areas of improvements
Improve King Field. There was a field that was just terrible and every team would practice on it at some point. Either do some rennovations or get rid of it would be what I say.

Hackley was in the top 3 for every single sport we played while I was attending. There are a lot of sports offered and facilities to help you train.

There are a lot of AP and Advanced Courses being offered at Hackley for the sciences which is great for those interested in pursuing the sciences seriously.

They should let you choose at which grade you take which science. Currently its assigned as physics in 9th and chemistry in 10th but why not let a student pursue a topic in science they are really interested in for their first 2 years?
