Strengths
The english dept's biggest strength was providing a great baseline of grammar knowledge at an early age, and I thought the seminars were great

The seminars, though great conceptually, was tough to actually get into the class you wanted. It would be better if I could take something I was interested in - also while I was well versed in rhetorical analysis, I had to learn a different style of writing when I got to UChicago that was more focused on problem construction and it would have been helpful if i had learned it at RCDS

There's a large selection of science classes to choose from. From Physics C: MEM, to Environmental Science, Biology, and Chemistry.
Areas of improvements
The physics department really needs some help. Unlike chemistry and biology where students must take a regular class before the AP course, AP Physics has no such requirement. Therefore, many students are going into physics without any prior knowledge and failing the class.

Some of the earlier non-AP courses, especially Biology, were extraordinarily rote and had basically no educational value to any student not pursuing a career in that field. The most rote material should probably have been optional instead of part of the mandatory curriculum.

Advanced Geometry with Mr. Sebastian Mineo. Mr. Mineo is a very approachable teacher who simplified Geometry and constantly engaged with his students.

Some parts of the freshman and sophomore year coursework felt rather irrelevant–if calculus were moved ahead in the curriculum and space were made for additional math education, especially in statistics, the education would provide more college preparation.

Modern World, Mr. Sliter: I think history from the Industrial Revolution is the most interesting and straightforward to learn. I found his presentation and teaching style compatible with my learning methods.

The Modern World class I took with Mr. Sliter in sophomore year was my favorite–it encompassed the more recent historical and political issues that I enjoy learning about and featured creative projects that made it more entertaining.

American Rhetoric: Mr. Heintz. Contrary to the many opinions of my classmates, I believe his essays and teaching style helped improve my writing skills. What I learned in class can be applied for things I do in the future.

I took a course with Dr. Katz on Asian-American Literature my senior year, and highly enjoyed it. It introduced me to some fascinating texts I was previously unfamiliar with, and explored some important cultural topics.

Counselors did not seem to care much about students as opposed to caring about matriculation targets, college preparation should probably have started earlier, and college counselors did not have the level of knowledge on individual schools that I have come to expect.

The Administration, especially under Head of School Randall Dunn, actively listened to student concerns and allotted time to speak with active students and alumnae.

There were significant changes in the Administration entering the 2022-23 school year, meaning that a lot of consistency was lost.

RCDS was rigorous and had ample resources for students.
Areas of improvements
The RCDS student body was often hyper-wealthy, spoilt, and utterly detached from reality. The small size of around 100 people per graduating class made it difficult to meet different sorts of people.

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
RCDS is a small school, with all of the deficits and benefits that entails. Some students may find the environment too restrictive and cloistered.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
Mr. Sliter was my favorite teacher–I did an independent study with him and greatly appreciated his abundance of knowledge on various political topics.
What courses would you recommend?
Economics & Politics was a useful course (With Mr. Sliter and Ms. Everett), and there should definitely be a more in-depths economics course at RCDS in the future.

Rye Country Day can accommodate students with a variety of interests and backgrounds. Teachers are consistently good and work with students outside of class times. The school prepares students well for both college admissions and college academic rigor.

Rye Country Day places emphasis on athletics but should allow for more optionality.

The school can be inherently competitive but there are many resources available to students. The school can accommodate many different types of students in both an academic and social sense.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
Mr. Ethan White. He is a wonderful person both inside and outside of class. He is understanding and concerned with the well-being of his students.

Any Honors Proseminar taught by Mr. Ted Heintz.

The academic and athletic opportunities available for everyone. There are many classes that are offered that you might not typically find at other schools.

Informing the student body of opportunities available to them. When I was a student, I was unaware of many awards or opportunities to learn a new skill that people just never told me about.

Be open to trying out different subjects and classes. Your dean and advisor want to support your interests so take advantage of the resources RCDS has to offer.

Ms. Bell. She was very supportive and understanding of my worries and struggles. I feel that she truly cares for her students, something I didn't really feel with some of my other teachers.

AP Chemistry, Ms. Farrell. English 9, Ms. Bell. Modern World, Mr. Sliter. AP Computer Science A, Mr. Leath. Honors Biology, Mr. Rue. American Rhetoric, Mr. Heintz.

The science department is strong in offering courses with a lot of lab time, which is helpful to actually see the applications of what you learn.
Areas of improvements
There's not much beyond the baseline APs in each area (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Environmental Science). I know they recently added an Organic Chemistry Class, but if you want to go into, say, biology, there's not a class above the AP.

My favorite history course was my 8th grade history class taught by Dr. Mitschele. He made it really fun and I still remember him getting on a desk to do the "city on a hill" speech

At the end of 8th grade, we did a project where we could choose any issue in American History, and I chose to study the death penalty. It was really cool to research it and put together a pamphlet informing my classmates about its history.

Strengths
The English Department is really strong in teaching students how to become good writers. They (usually) assign first and final drafts and give feedback in the middle to help.
Areas of improvements
I think the English Department could be better on the grading aspect. My friend once wrote a paper that the teacher commented was much better than her last paper, but she received the same grade for both.

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
Rye Country Day School will push you hard, but you will get out of it what you put in. My friends and I often sat down together doing homework for separate classes, which gave us time to spend together in school. The college counseling office is great; they might tear apart your essays a couple times, but it's because they know you can write better.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
My favorite teacher was Mr. Robinson, the technical director for the Performing Arts Center. I never had him as a teacher, but I was part of the stage management crew for our musicals since 8th grade, and he's just a great person to be around and have support you.

I would also recommend taking classes with Dr. Gueye and Mr. Mineo (both math teachers). I would also recommend taking a class with Mr. Rue but he retired.
