Close together faculty within the athletic department.

There was a lot of disrespect toward teams in the athletic department who were not necessarily the best in their given conference. There were a number of incidents in the athletic department that leadership handled poorly. I was also on multiple teams who were sent a number of weak apologies for problems that the athletic department took responsibility for.

They really developed our writing skills and made us feel confident analyzing primary sources. The classes were all very interesting and we had options to take classes with different topics in 10th and 12th grade.

I really liked taking South Asian History in 10th grade with Ms. Premand. It was nice to be able to choose the region I was studying and we read really interesting primary sources.

Strengths
Athletics were just always so fun at Sidwell and I always had good relationships with all coaches. Sidwell provides such a wide variety of options that everyone can find something to be a part of
Areas of improvements
As a soccer player, I found that sometimes we just needed more equipment. Simple things such as needing more balls or better ball pumps or more training equipment make such a big difference. I also think that because of the School’s emphasis on peace and love, the ability to have a lot of competitiveness was lost and frowned upon

I was a varsity soccer player for three years. I loved our team dynamics and Coach Ibrahim Toure was such a great addition to our community and team

Strengths
Allowing students to be creative was always a strength that the Arts Department had. The teachers also created a relaxing, fun experience

I think that Sidwell could invest more into their arts department. I sometimes felt limited in what I was able to do because of equipment or things like that

My favorite course was Photography with Ms. Constantinople. Learning how to actually utilize a camera was so helpful and Ms. C’s caring and fun personality made being in class so enjoyable.

Learning how to organize thoughts & hypotheses was a strong part of the Science courses at Sidwell

Sometimes the material was just very difficult to understand and entire classes would end up failing a text or exam

The ability to reach teachers and their willingness to help out was the best part of the math department at Sidwell. It made learning much easier and helped us always feel up to date on the material

I sometimes felt that the speed of some courses were a bit accelerated for my liking, and I would get the feeling that as I was just starting to truly understand a subject we would move on

Strengths
Similar to the English Department, the way in which students learn to write argumentative/analytical essays is definitely Sidwell’s biggest strength. The way in which we were taught to analyze sources and ultimately use them in an argumentative manner was very useful
Areas of improvements
While the ability to analyze sources and texts is a crucial part of being a good writer, sometimes these source analyses became very repetitive and it felt like we were always doing the same thing in class and for homework.

My favorite History course was my Senior year course on American Government. Mr. Steinbach’s discussion based class structure was so fun to be a part of, and our writing assignments were more creative and personal rather than argumentative. This was such an enjoyable course and I recommend it to all students

My favorite textbook was the Chasteen book on Change in Latin America. This was the textbook for my sophomore year course on Latin American Social and Political Change, which was such an interesting course as we learned about the development of Latin American societies and the cycles seen in Social and Political thought.

Strengths
The English Department’s biggest strength is teaching students how to write analytical essays based on books and readings. They teach students how to understand the texts at a level deeper than just surface level, and ultimately teach students how to put together an analytical piece of writing based on the readings.
Areas of improvements
The discussion-based structure of classes was always a great experience to have, but some of the texts that we read were sometimes a bit boring. That being said, there were also many amazing books and novels that we covered that made up for these few less interesting ones.

My favorite course in the english department was the 11th grade English level. I had Dr. Harvat, and his style of teaching and discussion along with the amazing texts such as The Great Gatsby made the course enjoyable and always interesting.

My favorite book was either The Great Gatsby or Pride and Prejudice. They both had such interesting plots and themes/motifs/characters that made the story even more page-turning. The satisfaction in understanding the themes/characters and how they affected the plot of the story was very enjoyable

The administration was not really involved in our everyday experience as students, but I would say they always kept things in order and we never really experienced any insane changes due to their actions

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
Sidwell Friends goes above and beyond to prepare students for the future. The rigorous classes and experience at Sidwell is very worth it in the long run, as students end up ahead of many peers in terms of preparation at the next level.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
My favorite teacher was Dr. Harvat. I had him for 2.5 out of my 4 high school years. Everyone loves him for a reason and he is such a good teacher and person that he makes all of his classes enjoyable.
What courses would you recommend?
If you are interested in language, the Chinese program is very strong. I took Chinese and I felt that I learned a lot With Ms. Tang and Ms. Wang

Strengths
Student community at Sidwell was the part I cherished most. It felt like across the four grades there was a sense of unity and no one felt like a complete stranger. I think certain teachers and administrators were incredible people and that made it so much easier for students to want to do the work for them
