Science Department
Strengths
I think the content that they teach. It goes deep and covers a lot of topics.
Areas of improvements
I found that the teachers weren't the best in covering the information, and my peers and I were often left confused. It was very difficult to study, especially Chemistry, when little feedback was given.

9th grade Honors Biology with Ms. Fancher because it was the easiest one. After that, the classes just became exponentially difficult and I was not as engaged or as interested in Science anymore.

Math Department
Strengths
The content and offering an AP curriculum
Areas of improvements
The teachers. This wasn't the case for me as I had phenomenal teachers, but I often heard my peers and other students complaining about the lack of care from their teachers, especially at the lower math level.

12th grade Multivariable Calculus with Mr. Kohl. That was the most fun class I have taken because he taught it exceptionally well. It was always engaging and restored my love in math.

History Department
Strengths
The teachers are well skilled and very personal- making it very easy to learn and stay engaged.
Areas of improvements
I think the content. I wasn't very satisfied with the content and found that it placed a strong emphasis on the writing portion (which is in line with the English department), but I would have preferred a more history based class that would have prepared me for the AP test better.

Favorite course
11th grade Advanced American Literature with Mr. Murphy. I think that Mr. Murphy did a fantastic job teaching the class and this was one of my favorite classes at SLS. My writing improved a lot and American History is one of my passions.
Favorite book or work studied
The Vietnam War in Advanced American Literature. It was super super engaging and tied together a portion of American society that I wasn't too familiar with.
Favorite work or artist studied

English Department
Strengths
The teachers were amazing and are well versed in their knowledge. They focus on improving your writing, rather than general knowledge such as vocabulary or literary skills. Overall, one of the most valued departments at SLS.
Areas of improvements
There is a clear and obvious bias in writing style that varies between teacher to teacher. This can make it difficult to switch from grade to grade. I think that individual progress should be prioritized over fulfilling a teacher's personal requirements.

10th grade Honors British Literature with Mr. Flachsbart (now retired). I felt as though he cared the most about my personal progress and gave very helpful feedback that is still useful in college.
Favorite book or work studied
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald because of its influence on American literature and its themes.

College Counseling
Strengths
The personalized feedback they give you. Because of the small class size, I was able to have great College Counselors who were able to give me feedback 1 to 1 that helped me specifically and wasn't as generalized.
Areas of improvements
Not my complaint, but other students mentioned that it is the job of the College Counseling Department to support their college decisions, not to influence or downplay their high school successes during the application process (undershooting potential universities, etc).

How well did St. Luke's School (CT) prepare you for college?
SLS prides itself on "preparing its students for the University experience," but I have found that to be completely false. I feel as though there was a lot of content that I am missing here because it was covered under SLS' individual "Advanced" system rather than the AP system.
Which courses in particular prepared you well for your university experience?
AP BC Calculus.

Administration
Strengths
The school was very organized overall and there were no real problems at all. Everything was covered very well.
Areas of improvements
Listening to student government. Partly because they run their own system so well, they forget to leave room for student feedback so I felt as though little to nothing changed during my time at SLS even when students were complaining.

Strengths
I think that SLS has one of the strongest communities, due to its smaller size (except for sport games). I found that everyone got along with each other and there were no real problems.
Areas of improvements
Academics and Athletics. Students made no effort to attend athletics games because the sports weren't very good. But more importantly, the academics need to be improved significantly.
How likely are you to recommend St. Luke's School (CT) to a prospective student?
What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
SLS prioritizes individual progress and performance with small class sizes and teacher-student ratio. I found that this was especially influential in developing my academic skillset throughout High School.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
Mr. Murphy/Mr. Kohl/Mr. Brusko. They were the most personal and made it fun to attend class while also skillfully teaching the content. I learned the most in these classes and found myself looking forward to attending them.
What courses would you recommend?
Computer Science courses/designLab. Mr. Brusko teaches very well and I highly recommend (although I do not believe that the curriculum has prepared me for college at all).

They do a good job of teaching concepts.
Areas of improvements
The biggest issue is again that the math department should be a bit more relaxed. In college, even as a finance major, math isn’t extremely important. The fundamentals are but not anything more than that.

Areas of improvements
The biggest area of improvement is the English department is too harsh on kids. In college, writing essays is a lot more relaxed and not as big as I feel the English department at SLS makes it.
