University School of Nashville is a K-12, independent, all-gender, non-sectarian day school established in 1975 as the successor to Peabody Demonstration School. USN is known for its academic excellence and for its commitment to putting students first.

The department was very inclusive. Anyone could play a sport if they wanted.

My favorite sport was soccer with Coach Masuhr. It was always a fun environment that focused on growth and positivity.

The teams were fun and coaches really cared about their athletes.

Sometimes the coaches favored athletes and hated others and I was one that was hated by a coach.

They have excellent teachers who love what they do and can clearly teach their topics. They encourage students to always push themselves and improve.

Classes were very engaging and most teachers planned out classes and filled time with helpful activities.

I found the "regular" level classes too easy and the "advanced" level too difficult. I think they could improve by providing an intermediate option.

I enjoyed AB calc by Crenshaw. She clearly explained every topic before tests and would build relationships with her students. She would support and help her students no matter what.

American Studies because even though it was a really hard class, it was the most engaging history class i’ve ever had and it taught me a lot of useful skills in a short time period.

The mothers, because we got to read it in small and intimate reading groups in a book club kind of way and it helped me with my reading comprehension in a less high stakes environment.

Nothing sticks out to me currently because I took American Studies(a combination of english and history), and sophomore year on zoom.

They should encourage more students about history and offer varying kinds of classes. They could potentially give students more reasons to pursue history in the future.

AP US History with Mrs. Miletich was by far my favorite. I loved the content of the class and it prepared me well for college.

Strengths
One of the biggest strengths of the English department was its emphasis on cultural diversity. In most classes, we read texts from a variety of cultures and time periods. Also, these classes strongly valued personal growth through writing which helps students to develop their writing skills at a fast pace.
Areas of improvements
Overall, I liked the English department. If something had to improve I would say sometimes the difficulty of classes ranged a lot and some teachers were way harder than others.

Their large selection of different classes allowed students to choose what personally interested them and they were extremely flexible and understanding
Areas of improvements
They should expand on the selection of books read during the school year and for summer. They should also have educational conversations about controversial authors instead of just banning their works.

The Hero’s Journey by Dean Masullo. This class exposed me to culturally relevant literature and expanded my reading comprehension skill set.

Teachers worked very hard with you on essays and helped students as much as they needed it. The books we read were very interesting and the teachers went into depth on them.

Sometimes they would assign big readings that were hard to do in the amount of time given.

Helping you if you go to them independently outside of class. even for something that’s not class related

Assigning too much work and grading things based on completion instead of quality of work. But in stem courses it’s always graded based on quality of work and so it creates an imbalance.

They clearly advised students to fitting colleges and showed empathy during stressful times.
Areas of improvements
Personally, I did not interact with the college counseling office that much, but they need to show less bias towards their favorite students.

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
It’s a school that’s more like a big family. It’s a really healthy environment that pushes you to your best ability but comforts you at the same time.

Dr. Van Slyke because we really connected during my independent study and she opened a lot of doors for me.
What courses would you recommend?
All the science courses. Anatomy and Physiology and Cognitive Neuroscience

That it is a diverse environment filled with students of different backgrounds, so you must come prepared with an open mind and ready to have educated discussions.

My favorite teach was Josephine Huang. She truly cared for every student in my class and pushed us to fully immerse ourselves into learning chinese

What is the most important thing a prospective student should know?
I think the most important thing students should know about USN is the strong connections you form with classmates. The school encourages collaboration in and outside of the classroom and allows students to bond in a variety of different ways.
Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
My favorite teacher was Dr. Wheeler. She met all students at their level and helped me grow immensely.
What courses would you recommend?
I loved AP Spanish with Sutton and all of Mr. Luffman's classes.

You will be prepared for college very well. The teachers form a bid and connection with you. Everyone has your best interest at heart.

Ms.Godwin was a top tier teacher and she made my 5th grade year worth it.

Creative writing, advanced building and design, BAM to BLM
